Baykonur Cosmodrome

The cosmodrome is approximately 7,360 square km. in area near the Syr Darya river in the Kyzl-Orda Oblast in Kazakstan,380 km. southwest of the old city of Baykonur. It is specifically located near the old village of Tyuratam and the city of Zarya, which was renamed Leninsk in 1958, and renamed Baykonur in 1996.
